Momentum is building as Stage 1 works move towards the finish line, with the marina beginning to welcome people back as sections of the site reopen and community activity returns.

It was great to see the Joondalup City RSL host their first ANZAC Day ceremony back at the marina last month, along with strong community use of the boat ramps and people getting out on the water.

Below, you’ll find the latest updates, including our April Project Update video, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at progress on site so far, along with a link to our boating safety series.

Name the lobster and ship!

Our ocean themed playground is taking shape, and we’re inviting kids and teens to help name two of its standout play features – a giant western rock lobster and an adventurous ship.

This is your chance to leave a lasting mark on a brand-new community space at Ocean Reef Marina. Entries should be fun, creative and inspired by the coast, the marine environment and the ideas behind the playground’s design. You can submit a name (and a short explanation) for one or both play elements.

How it works
The competition will run in two stages:
• Name submissions: 20 April – 17 May
• Public voting: 25 May – 21 June

Winning names will be revealed at the playground launch, featured in Ocean Reef Marina promotions, and prizes will be awarded to shortlisted entries and winners.

Free to enter and open to Western Australian residents aged 18 and under.

Let’s create something fun, memorable and community made.

Playgrounds are coming to life

Family friendly spaces are taking shape at Ocean Reef Marina, with custom playgrounds coming to life and bespoke features arriving to reflect the ocean inspired setting. Beach walls and shelters are nearly complete, while the new restroom facility for the main public open space behind the future family beach is now on site. In mid-year, further planting and the installation of the grassed area will take place. These play areas and community open spaces are anticipated to be open to the public later this year.

An important community milestone is also fast approaching, with the ANZAC memorial scheduled to move to its new home in midMay. This will be adjacent to the recently planted lone pine tree next to the new Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club.

Boating safety series

We’ve recently partnered with the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure to produce a short video series focused on boating safety.

The three videos step through what to check before you leave home, best practice at boat ramps, and how to safely launch and retrieve your vessel. With some great boating weather on the horizon, now’s a timely reminder to brush up on the basics and enjoy the water safely. Watch the series here

Marina access and parking reminder

Marina access remains via Hodges Drive, with Boat Harbour Quays closed until early June. Car parks at the club rooms and boat ramps remain open and accessible.

For more details on construction, you can check out our latest update here: Ocean Reef Marina Construction Update – April 2026 – OCEAN REEF MARINA

Lighting and ‘Smart’ upgrades

The new boat ramps at Ocean Reef Marina are now illuminated, improving visibility and safety at any time of day and giving skippers greater confidence when launching or retrieving.

Whether it’s an early morning departure or a lateevening return, the Marina is ready when you are. With the eight new boat ramps now open and fully operational, Ocean Reef Marina is already proving to be a reliable and wellequipped launch point for Perth’s boating community.

Have you launched from the new ramps yet? Come down and experience them for yourself.

Behind the scenes, the microgrid is energised, streetlights are operational, and EV chargers are currently being installed – supporting safer, more sustainable marina operations.

Looking ahead

Major works will continue through May, with playground and public open space installations progressing across the site. The Destination Basin Edge Wall is also near completion. This marks a significant milestone in delivering the waterfront precinct.

Smart City infrastructure is also being rolled out, with features designed to quietly support how people live, move and enjoy the coastline.

From checking parking availability before you arrive to seeing how busy the boat ramps are, smart systems will help make everyday decisions simpler and more informed – right from your phone.

Behind the scenes, energy use and lighting will be monitored and managed through a smart microgrid, helping create a more efficient and sustainable marina. We’ll be sharing a short video in the coming weeks to explain these features in more detail.
